27 Maggio 1987, circa venti anni fa. La luce naturale cede alla sera. I Pretenders sono l'ultima band a lasciare il palco di quello che è un vero e proprio festival. Prima di loro: Lone Justice e Big Audio Dynamite. Oltre a quella naturale vanno via di colpo anche le luci dei riflettori. E' il grande momento: nel buio del palco si muovono lesagome di Edge, Adam Clayton e Larry Mullen, che prendono possizione e possesso degli strumenti. Come consuetudine, quando l'intro di Where The Streets Have No Name è già partito, mentre Larry tiene il tempo e Edge attacca, accolto dal decondo boato del pubblico, entra Bono: "Hello Roma. E bum, entra Larry e parte l'intera base musicale. E' l'apoteosi, fatta di tante cose, non ultima la scena avvolta nel fascio di luci rosse. "I want to run, I want to hide...".
Quando Streets si dissolve c'è appena il tempo di sentire il primo Thank You prima di essere sopraffatti dalla carica di I Will Follow. Nel frattempo, fuori lo stadio, nelle abitazioni del quartiere che circonda lo Stadio Flaminio, si sparge un simpatico panico, posto che è infondato. I centralini dei Vigili del fuoco sono presi d'assalto perchè Roma è in preda al terremoto. Sono gl U2.
Trip Through Your Wires apre una parentesi più rilassante completata da I Still Haven't Foun What I'm Looking For/Exodus e MLK. Prima di Haven't il primo "contatto" tra Bono e Roma. ..."Questo posto...è grande.... ma noi...e voi...siamo...più...grande! ...Grazie" dice Bono. Facile immaginare la reazione del pubblico. "Welcome To The Unforgettable" e si risale verso ritmi più sostenuti. Quanto segue è da brividi. Prima la "trilogia" del tempo: Bullet The Blue Sky/The Battle Hymn Of The Republic, Running To Stand Still, Exit/Riders On The Storm/Gloria (Van Morrison) e poi In God's Country e Sunday Bloody Sunday. Cinque pezzi per una fase del concerto che colpisce al cuore il pubblico romano, imprimendo un marchio indelebile. Bullet è quella essenziale e tiratissima prima maniera. Il pubblico risponde alla perfezione partecipando al 'Ha la la la de dey' in Running. Ricorda Bono: "allo Stadio Flaminio di Roma, Brian Eno se ne stava a lato del palco. In genere la sua temperatura emotiva è piuttosto bassa, ma gli scesero le lacrime dagli occhi quando sentì trentacinquemila persone a Roma cantare il ritornello 'Ha la la la de dey', il ritornello di Running To Stand Still...". ..."This is a story about a religious man... who became a dangerous man... a very dangerous man... when he couldn't work out... when he misunderstood... ...the hands of love..."...Exit, bella è inquietante. ..."This is the song... This song speaks of my Country... and I can speak for all my Country, for any Country... this song, I hope one day to never sing again... ...Sunday Bloody Sunday". Lo stadio "esplode" ancora prima che Bono pronunci il titolo.
Arriviamo ad un'altra parentesi rilassante, ma durerà pochissimo. E' un momento bellissimo, toccante, di grande comunicazione, di strettissima integrazione tra gli U2 e il pubblico di Roma, che nel frattempo ha già avuto modo di farsi apprezzare per il classico alee ooh che spesso Bono segue. Bono racconta al pubblico che a causa di un problema alla voce è stato visitato da un medico a Roma. E che il medico gli ha detto che non avrebbe avuto bisogno di cantare perché "...the people of Rome will sing for me". Help dei Beatles e ancora Bono: "..."This is a song about a city... a city I grew up... sometimes when you are writing a song you don't know what you are writing about... I wrote this song for a friend of mine... who fell in love... with a dangerous drug... A drug called heroine... this song is Bad" Stupenda, lunghissima, nonostante gli evidenti problemi di voce che affliggono il frontamn degli U2. Non mancano linee e accenni di Ruby Tuesday e Sympathy For The Devil dei Rolling Stones. October, New Year's Day e una Pride già ampiamente nota al pubblico chiudono la prima parte dello show.
Gli U2 ringraziano, escono, escono. E' il rito. Rientrano: With Or Without You/Shine Like Stars è il colpo di grazie per un pubblico follemente innamorato. ..."You have been very good to us... thank you... we don't forget it": 40 chiude e Roma non smette più di cantare. How long to sing this song? How long to sing this song? How long...how long...how long... How long...to sing this song.

1987 - Italy: Wanna Rumble?: During a show in Rome's Flaminio Stadio, U2's sound system sets off earthquake alarms in two neighborhoods.

Il Mercoledi del 27 Maggio 1987 per assistere al loro concerto allo Stadio Flaminio di Roma ho viaggiato, in treno e all'impiedi, per 12 ore.

Dalle abitazioni limitrofe, centinaia di persone chiamarono i vigili del fuoco: le vibrazioni sembravano quelle di un terremoto.

Bono, nei panni di Mr Mac Phisto, durante le prove dei due concerti tenuti allo stadio Flaminio il 6 e 7 luglio 1993 per lo Zooropa Tour.

Nell'occasione la band provò quasi un'intera setlist: Satellite Of Love, Zoo Station intro più volte, Zoo Station versione integrale, The Fly, Even Better Than The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways/Love To Love You Baby, One/Unchained Melody, Until The End Of The World, New Year's Day, Van Diemen's Land, i primi versi di All I Want Is You, Bullet The Blue Sky, Running To Stand Still, Where The Streets Have No Name, Desire.

6 luglio 1993: gli U2 sbarcano a Roma. E' la loro seconda volta dopo il trionfale debutto del 27 maggio 1987. E' lo ZooTv Tour, evolutosi in Zooropa Tour dopo la pubblicazione dell'album, appunto, Zooropa, e tre legs tra America, Europa e ancora America. Ho letto l'iniziativa del The Guardian, dei diversi artisti e scrittori che hanno raccontato il concerto "...that changed their lives". Mutuando da questa provo a dire la mia, ovvero quella di un comune mortale, follemente innamorato del Rock, della musica dal vico, degli U2, sopratttto dal vivo. Ho sempre pensato che gli U2 fossero nati per esibirsi dal vivo. Rendono di più, se è possibile una sorta di graduatoria con la versione studio. Vanno ascoltati "a palla" e possibilmente live, gli U2. Il 6 luglio fu seguito dal 7 anche per quel che concerne l'allora presenza degli U2 a Roma, allo Stadio Flaminio. E' difficile dire se fu la prima o la seconda serata a "cambiare la mia di vita". Sulla prima incise molto l'attesa, l'emozione che nell'aspettare il secondo concerto lasciò maggiore respiro ai battitti del cuore. Certo è che furono due serate indelebili. Al centro uno show che sarebbe avveniristico anche oggi, gli U2 come ancora non li conoscevo, due setlist da brividi. Il 5 luglio, solo gli appassionati senza limiti, che rispetto ad oggi... conoscevo meno, si recarono all'esterno del Flaminio dal quale emergeva ntididamente parte di una struttura che faceva pensare ad una sorta di torre di controllo aeroportuale. Le note, qui e là intervallate: l'inizio di Zoo Station, provata e riprovata, la versione intera, The Edge scatenato in The Fly, One comprensiva di Unchained Melody, insomma buona parte della parte iniziale di quello che sarebbe stato lo Show. Van Diemen's Land, l'amata All I Want Is You, e altre colonne Streets compresa. Provò perfino Mister MacPhisto e solo tempo dopo capii che aveva ironicamente osservato come lo stadio era troppo silenzioso (ovviamente le prove non erano aperte al pubblico). 6 luglio 1993: l'attesa mi porta via anche la curiosità per chi precede l'Evento: resta poco dei Pearl Jam, men che meno degli An Emotional Fish. A Torino aprì Ligabue. E quale migliore avviso di inizio concerto se non le prime note sparate a mille de L'inno alla gioia di Ludwig Van Beethoven? Si, la gioia, giusto. Nel mezzo della vorticosa dissolvenza della sinfonia Beethoveniana e dei tanti schermi che all'unisono propongono una sorta di alzabandiera comunitario, dal punto più alto della megastruttura scenica dello ZooTv Tour emerge la sintesi della rockstar, con tanto di sigaretta, mimica rivolta ad una più feroce dipendenza e passo da vopos. Cascano le stelle dell'Unione Europea e un Bono "elettrizzato" discende e s'impossessa del palco. E del Flaminio. E' Zoo Station. E' l'inizio di una notte che sfido chiunque l'abbia condivisa a non annoverarla come un marchio indelebile. The Fly, The Real Thing, Mysterious Ways, con tanto di primo approccio di Bono col pubblico e conseguente zapping dopo The Fly: tutto da vivere, orecchie, occhi, cuore. E il cuore s'impone quando attacca One/Unchained Melody. One, la mia prima One live. The End Of The World riapre quella sana tensione per la quale gli U2 meritano di essere ascoltati dal vivo. New Year's Day l'alimenta. Van Diemen's Land spiazza piacevolmente tutti: una chicca nella chicca. Bstage acustico, che qualcuno ha avuto il coraggio di definire fuori luogo, o meglio, momento, proprio perchè realizzato a metà show. Già, tutto, proprio tutto era avveniristico in quel tour! Angel Of Harlem, When Love Comes To Town, Satellite Of Love. Tutto nuovo per me. Nuovo e già "mio". Buio, la band riprende posizione e parte Bad/Norwegian Wood/All I Want Is You. Che nell sue poche linee eseguite deve ancora sfumare quando la chitarra, il basso e la batteria simulao un vero e proprio "crollo". Lo Stadio Flaminio stenta a contenere l'impeto di Bullet The Blue Sky. E' l'inizio della "trilogia" che per me rappresenta il momento più alto, emozionante, coinvolgente della storia della musica rock dal vivo. Bono parte con il costume che l'ha accompagnato fino a quel momento, fatta eccezione per la giacca alla Elvis, approfitta del mitico assolo di Edge che fa del pezzo la sua migliore versione live di sempre, esce e rientra in tenuta pseudo militarizzata. C'è molto del top gun. Quando le parole si esauriscono "nelle braccia dell'America", le note non si fermano e fanno da colonna sonora al elettrocardiogramma che introduce Running To Stand Still. Amplificata, per quanto amo questa canzone non oso definire questa la migliore versione in assoluto - ne avrei altre 2, 3, ma certo è che calata in questo contesto rappresenta una celestiale ipnosi. Ale ale, alleluja, ale aleee, alleluja; ale ale, alleluja, ale aleee, alleluja; Ale ale, alleluja, ale aleee, alleluja; Ale ale, alleluja, ale aleee, allelujaaaaaaa. Quando sfuma, Running è sommersa da un turbine che traghetta il Roma verso le ali della libertà vera. Si sente appena Bono accennare This is the end, the end (The Doors) e la perturbazione di suoni si apre verso il sereno delle prime note di Where The Streets Have No Name. Con Pride il pubblico ha la sua rivincita, sovrastando di versi e cori lo spettcolo. Fine. Per il mmento. Spazio a tutti i meccanismi infernali dello ZooTv Tour fino agli schermi che proiettano Mr MacPhisto al trucco. Rientrano: Desire/You Make Me Feel So Young/(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction. E' lui, MacPhisto ad alzare ulteriormente uno show già vertiginoso. La telefonata, intraprendente, il solito tut..tu..tu della linea telefonica, sufficiente anch'esso a far cantare MacPhisto: I Just Called To Say I Love You e, sulle note vere, Ultraviolet e il suo fantastico attacco di chitarra. With Or Without You riporta MacPhisto tra i "buoni": off the horns e spazio ai sentimenti. Love Is Blindness chiude lo show come una fresca serata di settembre annuncia la fine dell'estate. Can't Help Falling In Love reinventata da Bono e, poi, a mò di accompagnamento dei titoli di coda, dalla voce di Elvis, coinvolgono Roma in un grande abbraccio d'arrivederci. Ma come dimenticare il 7 luglio e, nell'esatto ordine d'esecuzione, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, I Will Follow, Redemption Song (superlativa) e Sunday Bloody Sunday, con Bono "sotterrato" dalla voce di Roma. A metà strada, tra i sogni ad occhi aperti, tra il 6 e il 7 luglio 1993, m'è cambiata la vita. Se per questo s'intende il più grande concerto al quale ho mai assistito. E forse non solo...
